Conversation: Be Yourself

“The moment you accept responsibility for EVERYTHING in your life is the moment you tap into your power to change ANYTHING in your life” Hal Elrod

I don't really know when it happens. That moment you get in good with who you are and stop the hater talk. For me it's a gradual process that unfolds when you start DOING stuff aka living your life. This means showing up for all the parts of life that comes your way, especially the really hard and challenging shit. I've learned the most about myself by diving into things that really scared me. It reveals these characteristics about who you are and piece by piece, through your experiences, you build a foundation that's all YOU. It's a on going, fo' life journey. Which I might add is pretty cool. You will always have the opportunity to learn something new about who you are and what you choose to become.

It's easy to get sucked into what you think everyone wants you to be. Your gesture of figuring out YOU can be a loud statement or a small whisper. Either way, do it on your own terms.  Stop trying to figure out who you are by standing still. Start walking, listening, trying and filtering shit that doesn’t fill whatever goodness you’re trying to create. Being yourself is showing up without the need to edit parts of who you are. You are creating this WHOLE you and that means leaning in to the ebbs and flows of this big beautiful, chaotic, purpose driven thing called life. It wants all of you. I want ALL of you.

My Afro

All photos by the talented Weston McGhee Photography

Growing up I wanted long, straight hair that gently played on my back when the breeze touched it. My mom refused to let me straighten my curly mane. I would sneak and have by friend Niqua press my hair with a hot comb. If you don't know what that is, it's a comb made of metal that you put on a gas burning stove to heat up. You allow it to cool a bit and then you proceed to burn the shit out of your hair just so that it can be straight. I know. F@$king crazy! I did that because the idea of leaving my hair as is was something I did not see around me. I saw women pressing, perming, blowout styling their hair to look other than what it was naturally meant to be. This is certainly not a bash on those who straighten their hair. I assure you, if i want to mix it up a bit I'll blow out my hair  because I'm a grown woman and I can do what I want ;) Ok, I digress. When we press, straighten or do anything different to alter ourselves, I want it to be built on a road where we are defining our own beauty.

The thought that black, natural, curly, kinky, unprocessed, left to do what it does best, froed out hair was not reflected to me as beautiful. It's changing. We are seeing a diverse mix of women stepping forward and demanding to be reflected in the images blasted towards us. Why? Because WE EXIST to be seen and heard. So much is happening with how we as women see ourselves. WE are digging deeper towards the AS IS part of ourselves that others thought strange or not enough and allowing it to be seen, fully. It's a real conversation that has to be echoed in a time where filters and editing skews so much of we see as beautiful. What I see now in myself took years of adjusting, filtering and being around women who know how to love themselves. These REAL reflections are what our little girls will witness, giving then the opportunity to SEE that their beauty is right there, as they are, right now. Strange, complicated, knappy hair, unruly, smart, loud, bossy, quiet, driven, defiant, necessary, vulnerable...beautiful AS IS.

Kind Girls At The Table

When I think of the moments I regret it usually involves 2 types of situation: not standing up for myself and not standing up for others. Those moments where I stood in silence held weight on my conscience. This weight was something I carried without even knowing it until I became older, made friends, lost friends and uncovered bits of myself along the way. I realized the immense power that came with choosing. The act of kindness is a choice. Kindness isn't a unicorn and it's certainly not naivety. We don't get to sit by and just be. Even the act of not choosing is a decision. Kindness can be uncovered the same way we fuel love. With doses of intention, understanding, compassion and being a genuine soundboard of honesty. I've witnessed how this real gesture of caring/ kindness can transform all parties involved in this exchange.  It's not all rainbows and sunshine but that effort and you are worthy.

I at times struggle to understand why we feel the need to break each other down. For me it comes down to making a choice to listen, digest and then speak because my words and actions matter. We can choose to not be apart of the rhetoric of hate. It stifles hope, perspective and just the basic human understanding of listening to our different stories. The mean girl stance lingers because there's a desperate need to belong. I'm apart of this and it makes me feel special so YOU CAN'T SIT HERE attitude. Exclusion creates this centrifuge of minds where all of a sudden we look around at our table and everyone's the same. I've learned the most from those that differ from me. I can see the comfort of having people in our world that think and act as we do but I can also see the silence that comes with it.

Top: Farrow     Jeans: H&M      Shoes: Joie

What has allowed me to register some of these feelings is knowing what exclusion feels like. We've all been there and *know* this feeling. Snotty, catty, rude, mean and dismissive. All words I want my stepdaughter Maddie to know and actively make a choice to step up to the plate and be otherwise. The "real talk" of empowering women doesn't have to be a loud speaker statement in every situation. It can look like a real smile and it can sound like "Hi, I'm Laura. What's your name?"

Currently Dating: Embroidery

Film captured by the talented Jessica of J.Lee Photos at Griffith Observatory in LA

Embroidered pieces have a way of either slaying me with happy twirling thoughts or making me want to sit in a rocking chair and knit. Since I'm a twirler, I look for styles that have a playful simplicity. This little number is from Zara. Simple, easy to wear and affordable. I bought it because I loved it. If there's a trend that you want to try, I say slip on a style that takes on the trend in a "I can wear it effortlessly kind of way."  If you find yourself needing a "how to guide" on rocking it, just skip it babes! Ain't nobody got time for that :)

Trends are a great way to incorporate a little extra fun and play into your wardrobe. It shouldn't be stressful after-all it's just clothes. As I've said before, date the trends and marry the classics. Have a great Thursday my peeps and I'll see you next week. MUAH!

Why You Might Need Gold Pants

Beautiful blooming mustard leaves in San Juan Capistrano, Ca. All photos taken by the lovely and talented Tiffany of Tiffany J Photography

When I shop for my clients, it's a combination of finding styles that provide a refinement to their wardrobe and also incorporating extra special little pieces along the way.  Whether it's a fur trimmed classic trench or in my case some gold silk pants. It all adds an element of uniqueness that makes fashion what it should be. Your own expression.  Whatever your "gold pants"  heart desires, the point is to step out a bit and play.  Why? Ummm because it's just clothes. You're beautiful, deserving and why the hell not!  So if you desire that lace dress in lavender, the tuxedo inspired suit that vibes modern Katherine Hepburn or a simple silk blouse in a color that makes you feel extra saucy, I say #PURCHASE :) Don't overthink it. Mama will lay down some simple tips. It should fit you well ( lay well, hug you in the right places, no tugging/ pulling), make you feel great and when you look in the mirror, you should want to date yourself! Right!! Get out there and if you need some love on you guidance, you know where to find me. MUAH!

Color Crush: Blush Tones

Soft blush tones makes me giddy to be a girl. There's something a bit whimsical about wearing tulle as an adult. It allows us to give in to the child like dreamer inside of us. Twirling, is highly encouraged ;)

Freezing? Get These 3 Tights

Okay my fine peeps! Let us dive right into the meat and potatoes of this blog post. The past few weeks we've been hit with a whopping dose of old man winter. I love the snow but it has now left me to covering all of my limbs and wearing boots that provide traction to the snow/ ice :) I have moments where I'm blissfuly daydreaming about a sunny meadow and twirling ;) or laying on a beach, wearing a gold bikini and sipping on something refreshing. Ok, let's focus! In the meantime, we are dealing with the reality of cold weather and fashion is not just my job, it's also my therapy. I decided to rock a skirt where my legs were no longer trapped in jeans or some thermal contraption. Plus, how awesome is this skirt?!! You and I both know that I subscribe to the mantra of  "freezing isn't cute". So let me share 3 of my favorite tights to have in your closet so that you too can have the option of showing some leg amidst winter gloom.

Sweater and socks: JCrew  Skirt: Leith  Boots: Rag and Bone, Fancy Pants  Tights: Target

Get ready to add these goodness to your shopping cart. Black tights are a great staple and this little guy comes with a fleece lining inside ( say what?!). I know right, I'm hugging you too!! Next up, charcoal gray ribbed tights. This cool number from The Loft, pairs well with colored skirts and creates a soft transition, color wise,  from skirt to tights. Lastly, a navy pair, like these from Spanx. This particular pair has a gray undertone and can work well with many colors. It also has a built in shaper that makes everything feel safe and secure ;)

Hang in there my beauties, stay warm and I will see you next week! Muah!

How To Add Some Luxe To Your Daily Style

All this luxe, captured by Karen E Photo

I'm standing in line at Fred Meyer, waiting to purchase my grocery goods. The clerk looks at me and says "what you're wearing makes me happy, it's so...chic." Okay babes, let me explain the outfit my sweet clerk was admiring. Cashmere ivory sweater with black distressed denim, snow boots (cause it's snowmaggeden in boise ;), Camel colored wool trench coat with the...wait for it...my coppery red faux fur stole. It's a saturated yummy color that screams, luxe and I am all in. I want you to add some luxury to your everyday and yes, that includes the grocery store. It doesn't have to cost a fortune, it only needs to deliver that look and feel of a million bucks ;)

Adding that extra special something to your outfit can make your day oh so better. Especially when bad vibes tries to cramp your style. I layered this velvet tank over a fitted turtleneck and paired it with worn black denim. The velvet adds another layer of luxury and it makes me feel like I'm having my own party for the day. Who doesn't love a party?!! So what do I want you to do? Those fabulous earrings that sparkle like diamond, wear them with a simple oversized cozy sweater, leggings or skinnyjeans. That fancy blouse that you love and wear only to special events. Well it now has a date with your distressed jeans. That holiday sweater that makes you feel all glam, wear it with dark gray fitted pants or denim. Everyday, ummm that's right, I said it, everyday, you deserve the opportunity to put on what makes you feel and look good.  This is my sermon people and you guys know it!!

My Style Game For Making Winter My BFF

Winter bliss with Karen from Karen E Photos

There's nothing cute about being cold. Shivering as you power walk your way to your destination...f-bombing along the way as the chill factor expresses itself all over your body. Brrrrrr!!!! Winter is here babes  and he's going to try and have his way with you by willing you to flannel and smartwool everything. So let's try to keep it together and not let old man winter steal our style thunder.  So I've implemented a few key staples that allows me to navigate these frigid temperatures, snow, ice, sleet...whatever winter wants to throw my way. Are you ready to get cozy and maintain your cuteness? Snag these.

Real winter means a real coat. Yes, it can look great and keep you warm because we no longer want to experience the f-bomb walk to our destination anymore right....can I get an amen?! Wool is my friend or a friendly puffer. The one I'm rocking is an oldie but goodie from JCrew. There's a few yummy styles that are a must like this and this and you can't beat the price. Oh hey warm and stylish friend.

Cover those digits! Gloves are making their chic debut and keeping their purpose intact. That's right, your hands won't freeze. I found these beauts at Banana Republic and they have that cool smartphone sensitive fabric that allows me to tap, swipe and dial away. No frozen digits here.

Layer like a MOFO. If this sounds familiar it's because it's part of my style sermon ( preaching here). Layering is your friend. Today I've donned a fitted turtleneck under this adorable reindeer wool v-neck sweater. It does two things: it gives me the option of removing a layer if needed and I really can't handle wool (well some wool) directly on my skin so this way I can stay warm and not feel like my skin is about to burst into flames.

These boots are made for snow. Yes I will slip on my full of flavor ankle boots and trot along my merry way until I hit an ice patch that teaches me a lesson. Ouch!! Those lessons I don't want to repeat. Of course we can rock our booties, boots and other goodness in winter but when there's 4 inches of snow on the ground...let's keep it real here folks. We're friends. How cute are these Sperry Topsiders tho?!! Cozy, practical, stylish and I can skip in the snow if I wanted to. Seriously watch me skip.

Are we warm and cozy? I hope so. Thank you so much for all your love and support, it fuels me! As we head into 2017 I'll make certain to bring more of the goodness for you filled with love, purpose and a whopping dose of style. Happy New Year my peeps!!

My Morning Date with Westward Coffee

Coffee bliss with the talented/ ma babes Karen Krum of Karen E Photo ( all images)

It's early and it's not hard to tell what's on your mind once the alarm starts chirping ( do people still use alarms). My alarm is my hubby, he's a rooster. Seriously he wakes up at the same time, everyday, no matter what. Anyways, luckily it's the weekend and you can snooze once or twice before you dive into your weekend happenings. I shower and throw on some major comfy wear, laced with some style of course ( more on this outfit situation later). This weekend involved a serious coffee date with one of my babes.  We chat, eat bready things covered in sweet berry like concoctions and we sip away on delicious coffee. Coffee that makes your eyes smile at the sight  and smell of it. Coffee that requires a moment of silence as you cradle the cup in your hands and take that first sip....ya I know! It's java foreplay...get a room!! ;)  I'm sitting pretty in such a place. It's called Westward Coffee and Supply and it's the creation of mother and daughter Jessye White and Nicole Powell.

Located on Main street in downtown Boise, these babes decided to bring a fresh take to coffee lovers in Boise, Idaho. They're doing so by taking what they call their "pocket size" shop and building something that goes beyond your morning latte.

What made you decide to open a coffee shop?

Nicole: "My mom and I wanted to open a family business in Boise and had both worked in coffee. I wanted to get away from "making it" ie: big city big job big commute etc. and reconnect with the things that make me happy--people, conversations, and face to face interactions."

What does Westward bring to coffee lovers?

Nicole: "We have a different vibe than most coffee places. We are more traditional in our menu and do everything with great specificity--every cup of coffee is ground and brewed to order.  But mostly, we really know the people who frequent our shop and we strive to get to k ow the new ones. For us it's not about having the most nuanced palette or creating an environment that is complicated or intimidating, it's simply about making damn fine coffee and connecting with people in a genuine way. We like coffee and we like people so it's a natural fit.

Your space has a beautiful calm to it... tell me a little about the design concept?

Nicole: "Our space is simple and efficient partly because it is so small! We wanted something minimal because we like the idea of the never ending movement of life through the space.  The base palette is whites and ashy blonde woods because they create a perfect background for this concept. It is also reflective of what we love about Idaho. The wide open spaces, the miles of empty roads, the quiet after a snow. It's a peaceful place and we want that to show! We also have amazing photography from Rick Kuttler of our favorite places in the west."

Where does Westward fit amongst the growing trend of great coffee spots in Boise?

Nicole: "Westward is the kind of shop I fell in love with living in bigger cities like SanFrancisco and Portland. It's small, intimate and well curated. We also carry and represent Idaho roasters. We carry maps (Hailey) Doma (Coeur d'alene) and AfroPhil (boise) We are not trying to take over as a massive chain or sacrifice quality for the bottom line. We are family owned and operated and happy about that. I think we are just trying to create a nice, approachable, third wave shop where everyone is welcome to experience amazing Idaho roasters."

What's your beverage of choice?

Nicole: "A nice hot pour over!"

Nicole: "We believe that living local builds stronger communities and fosters relationships between the humans that live in them. Come in and have a cup before your next adventure or stay awhile and enjoy the atmosphere."

Don't mind if I do. There's a closeness that happens as you sit down in this modern, bright and welcoming space. It could be Nicole's charming wit or the pour-over magic she's about to deliver. I have a feeling it's both and so much more.

So now that you have your perfect latte in hand ( lucky you), lets chime in on the outfit situation. My obsession with style comes from a desperate need to be comfortable, like all the time. The audacity of me!! Merging both, especially when I style my clients is an exclamation that looking great can literally make you feel REAL good. I mean if that's not winning I don't know what is. So I work to create a fun balance with dressy and casual wear by mixing them together most of the time. No style stays in it's lane. We ALL play together. Sneakers with your lady like jacket, why the heck not?! :)

This darling sweatshirt is from JCrew and it has velvet dots. That's right, velvet!! It's cozy, dress me up or down and yes, comfy. Sweatshirts are no longer ONLY privy to being stowed in your back drawer to be removed for Netflix-athon. They can be front, center and style ready.

If you're heading to Westward shoot me a message...there's always room for good company and great coffee :)

Unicorns Wear Stripes

When I was 12 years old I thought that anything and everything was possible. After-all, I had just left my tiny world on the island of Jamaica and was now living in The United States of America. CRAZY!! As another new year slips it's way towards us I'm feeling a bit nostalgic about 2016 and all that its meant to me. I think the biggest take away was understanding more about what I think I'm capable of doing and reviving that 12 year old "I can" mindset. Adult life is so strange how it shifts the "I can do anything" ( I call this my unicorn) to "just do something". Your mind gets blown a bit when you stop making excuses and start failing at shit. Ya, that's what happens when you're all up in the "doing" part of stuff.  You mess up, learn, make progress, try harder and challenge yourself to be better. Not perfect because you and I know that exist only on IG ( those filters tho ;)

stripe sweater: JCrew   Denim: Levi    boots: Piece Unique

So I've battled with my unicorn...we believed at one time right?! Seriously, I can't be the only one. Well whatever your "unicorn" was, it was cool, you loved it and then one day it just vanished. My Mom would chime in right now and say "it call real life baby" in her very heavy Jamaican accent ( filled with Mama truth). Yes, real life chimes in but that doesn't have to be a dirty phrase. That's what's great about still believing as an adult in the "impossible", your "unicorn". You have all this "grown up" perspective to "real talk" your way through the logistics of your dream and the unicorn passion to rally your ass to go after it harder and make your purpose happen.

So as we embark on another year, I encourage you to unleash your "unicorn" and rally that passion you crave. Better yet, why not start the process right now, where you are.  I've got your back.

Cozy Sweater Goals

All photos by the darling, sweet and talented Toni of sydneystudiosandco

If you're anything like me, the start of the dropped temperatures, has me dreaming of cozying up in the best way. That usually includes busting out my old favorites in the sweater arena and finding those new ones that'll keep Mama going warmly and stylishly. I'm what you called chill factor challenged, which means, I don't like being cold, not one bit.  I think of the many many times I ask my hubby to turn the heat up ( because I'm incapable of doing it myself ;)  or making sure I have a good cardigan, jacket,  something to throw over myself, just in case.  So here's a few of my favorite sweater styles to tackle old man winter.

This cozy number and myself was featured in the launch of My Style Boise winter lookbook. There's nothing I love more than sharing the goodness with you guys and this fabulous duo, Marissa and Toni,  are creating a wonderful platform to do just that! Click here to view the first style guide that shows all the details on this look, the other lovelies featured and also our local shops for getting these styles. Can we say hello outfits?!!

This Vince, black cashmere sweater pairs well with just about anything and the funnel neck adds a fun modern edge. It's cozy, chic and will be my "go to" this Fall/Winter. The denim skirt was such a sweet find. You just can't go wrong with classic denim. This particular style is a bit shorter but packed with a whole dose of class because it's not too fitted. I love finding styles that do double duty. I can wear it Spring, Summer and Fall, just add a cool legging or tights and the cuteness continues! I found both of these beauts at Fancy Pants in downtown Boise.

Want more of what I'm loving on in the sweater world?? There's a lot but right now click here and here to check out two of the sweater styles on my radar. The first at H & M and this playful one at Topshop. Did I mention they're way under a $100, yes please! Let me know if you snag any of the styles shown. Stay warm my friends!

Comfort Wear With Style

Comfort wear can sometimes feel like dirty words in the style arena. Our hands are clasped praying that our casual everyday, throw on and go wear can live up to that sweet spot combination of  comfort and stylish. Well my awesome peeps get ready to rejoice because I have some easy style tips that will help you navigate this arena. Get ready to revel in comfort and still show up with style.

Jacket: Nike   Tee + Denim: JCrew

Say hello to my little friend denim

I know, why cant I put on some leggings. You can but a pair of great fitting denim instantly makes the outfit more pulled together. I'm rocking these straight leg front button denim from JCrew. They're a looser fit and pure comfort! I paired it with a simple white tee and my favorite go to in the shoe arsenal, ankle boots.

Layer, layer

A denim jacket, a cozy sweater, a structured cardigan, all provide a great anchor to a casual look. Your comfy casual wear is suppose to get you through your day feeling good and crossing off your "to do" list. So having the right layering piece allows you to remove a style if needed and keep it moving. I'm wearing this chic bomber from Nike.

The little details matter

Casual wear should be fuss free, so for me that means choosing my accessories carefully. My fun detail here is my gold bucket bag. So playful right!! It adds a little glam to a casual look and makes the outfit pop. So add a great scarf, earrings that add a little glam and get your day going comfortably in style :)

Wardrobe Time Saver: The Classic White Shirt

When you're rushing to get out the door, wardrobe staples will be your hallelujah "wear this" saver! Classic, timeless, easy and it looks good on you, yep that's what great wardrobe staples provide. That's pretty much what I look for when it comes to creating a cohesive wardrobe. On days when I can't even think about upping the cuteness, classics like this white shirt, swoop in, saving my outfit and sanity. The tuxedo style of this shirt adds a polished look to a great basic. Time savers like this allows me to get dress fast and have a look that still makes me feel good. That's the whole point right, you gotta feel good in it. I finished the look with some distressed skinny jeans ( you can easily go with classic dark wash denim) and a few fun bracelets. I'm out the door and I hope you are as well ready to tackle your day like a boss.  Have a fabulous one my awesome peeps.

4 Pieces That Creates Outfit Wow

Photography bliss with the uber talented Denise of Studio Boise

"Mmmmmm".... that's the sound I sometimes I make when I see a style that will "up" my wardrobe game. Yep, that's the same "mmmm" sound that Homer Simpson makes as he embarks on a deliciously glazed donut. Now I want a donut...okay let's focus people. What's all this about other than the need to now eat a donut?! Well my awesome peeps, it's about 4 styles that we've all seen that can make an ordinary outfit climb the "wow" scale.

1. Stripe top                       2. Pencil skirt                    3. Blazer             4. Ankle boots

These styles are classic, plays well with other pieces, looks great on every shape and my fave, affordable!

Stripe Top

I have yet to meet a stripe top that I didn't love. I mean, it's so good!!! The DNA of a stripe top: creates an automatic classic look, adds pattern/ interest and can be found in a price range that doesn't break the style bank. I went with this fitted bodysuit from Nordstorm Rack that was a major score. I'm talking under $10 people!

Pencil Skirt

Don't be scared as I mention this style. The game is changing on pencil skirts. That means there are so many more styles out there to flatter those yummy curves or in my case lack thereof.  It's classic ( see the trend here) and allows you to inject a feminine style which can be edged up by changing up the texture or pattern. This luscious mustard suede skirt I'm wearing is by Topshop and also a great find from Nordstorm Rack. This style is a bit high waisted which makes this look scream chic and it's so comfy!!

Blazer

Oh the fun to be had with blazers. Get out there and just try on a few. It can be tailored or boyfriendy ( aka loose fit). Whichever you choose, it'll bring a serious dose of style to your looks. The bevy of prices can vary but it really comes down to fit. If it looks great, get it!! I'm wearing a great find by Rag and Bone that I snagged on sale at Fancy Pants in downtown Boise. I've worn this blazer with shorts, denim, over a dress....I could go on. The masculine element of a blazer paired with all of our ladylike assets screams style wow....yes please!

I was probably texting you ;)

Ankle boots

You guys know that I will preach it all day every day...I refuse to be uncomfortable! Why? Because there is so many styles out there that provide comfort and yasss girlll, looks amazing!! One of my go to in my shoe arena is a great pair of ankle boot!! Comfy, versatile and provides a modern fresh look to any outfit. I'm a fan of a lower ankle boot like these when wearing skirts. They show off the ankle and creates a leaner silhouette.  These are one of my new favorite pairs on heavy rotation from Target. YASS!! Target. That's the great thing about style, you can find it any and everywhere.

If you snag any of these styles let me know!! I love LOVE hearing your comments and feedback. It keeps this poofy hair gal on her style toes ;)

3 Tips To Finding Your Style

Some uber fun with the talented Harley Goul

Style! What does it mean and how can we all capture it? I see style as a creative expression of who I am that can be translated in what I wear. I love fashion and the process of putting things together in ways most people might not. That's a big part of why I'm a personal stylist. I work to help my clients navigate what THEIR style is and of course, the process has to be FUN!! We have this moment that is happening right now where we get to determine what we wear, how we look and feel about our bodies without prescribing to anyone else's agenda. Can I get an amen for that please :) Here's a few of my "go to" tips to finding your style.

jacket: adidas   tank top: JCrew   Jeans: Frame ( Fancy Pants)   Shoes: Zara

Listen to what speaks to you

No voodoo or magical chanting here. Just a real look at what styles you find yourself feeling great in. Your t-shirts and comfy pants don't count because come on, those are a given. Wearing comfy pants as I type :) It's that blouse, dress or jeans you wear all the time that makes you feel confident and looks great on you. Get more of that! It could be the blouse is a classic style, start venturing more into finding styles that speak that same thread of classic.

Save what inspires you

Yep, that Pinterest board is a great idea. I love when my clients show me their style board. It allows me to see their wishes, loves and style thread. If you see an outfit you love, take a picture of it, remove it from the magazine and pin it on a style board. This allows you to see the styles that you find yourself gravitating towards and have a great reference to use for "what to wear".

Experiment and kick fear to the curb

What's fun about fashion is the ability to change our minds on what we want to wear and look at a moments notice. It doesn't have to be this serious, I'm going to marry you commitment. There's a lot of stores that offer similar styles that are budget friendly. If there's a style you want to try, just do it.  I've got your back. Trying on, can be a pain at times but the reward is seeing what works for you. The big win here is you're taking a little "love on you" time for yourself and could potentially find your new favorite outfit simply by trying.

5 Things That Fuels My Happy

I've tried to generate blog post that I can pre-plan and it never works. I am one of those people that has to be in the moment. I get the chance to speak with you from a space that I know is genuine and not just for the sake of typing a few words. The last few months have been busy and full of style loving mayhem and I've been asked how do I keep my light, happy go get it self charged.  For me, I've realized how important it is to FIND MY DOSE OF HAPPY IN EVERY LITTLE NOOK AND CRANNY THAT I ENCOUNTER. Don't get me wrong, life gets real, ugh...so real at times and you feel out of sorts but babes I tell you, when you look at things from the standpoint of what I am grateful for in this moment. Holy chipotle, it's a game changer.

Early morning bare faced and soul at The Society Hotel in Portland

Launching my own personal styling business came from a place of fear, desperate love of all things fashionable but most of all, having the opportunity to meet and style some of the most incredible humans. What that means to me is I AM THANKFUL FOR EVERY PERSON THAT COMES INTO MY LIFE, NO MATTER WHAT. I know it seems crazy because you're probably saying that there has been a few bad eggs that you wished you never encountered. What I take from that is a lesson. No matter the circumstance, you are going to be taught something, will give something and it is not a worthless moment.

PERFECTION ISN'T REAL BUT EFFORT IS. The comparison game can leave you feeling defeated. What I've learned and continue to learn is the more I focus on how can I be helpful today instead of who can help me today, the better I feel. My efforts to try, always isn't about how perfect I can make things but more about, am I doing all that I can right now. It grants me the permission to make mistakes, learn from them and simply try again and again.

FIND YOUR GOOD EGGS AND LOVE ON THEM HARD! I've had the opportunity to have so many people come in and out of my life with a purpose. Its made me appreciate the ones that fuel my happy by being honest, caring and never allowing me to doubt who I am.  They give me love and that awesome thread of connection. Show up for your good eggs and love on them all the time.

NOW MATTERS MORE. I try to soak up what is happening right now in this moment. Yes tomorrow is relevant and goals are drivers for your tomorrow. However, I try not to lose focus on the present. There can be so many distractions ( so many) that pulls you away from getting all that you can from your now moments that it can be easy to miss out on those small delights. My stepdaughter Maddie ( the cutest human ever), has told me not to be on my phone while she's talking to me...say what?!! It was a huge moment for me and for us. I give her my full attention and get to hear those little and big things that are important to her. Things I could easily miss if I wasn't fully present.

One of my amazing humans introduced me to Brené Brown.  She is an American scholar, author, and public speaker. Listening to her was an illuminating experience for me and whenever I find something that is awesome and teaches me, I must share it with you. This is one of my favorite quotes from her:

"Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen"  Brené Brown

I hope it brings to you your own sense of purpose in this fantastic journey called life.

What to wear: hello Fall

You know what I'm getting ready to say. It's almost here!!! F A L L!!  I know I know! Don't you fret because Mama will always have your style back. Yes, it's looming around the corner with that extra chill in the air but let's think of all the yummy and wonderful things that this friendly F-bomb brings our way: pretty leaves, boots, cashmere,  skinnyjeans and sweet sweet layering  and oh ya, the pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks ( bring it!). I will admit, I want to hold on to my sunshine and boyfriend shorts just a bit longer but we've got work to do and outfits to make happen. SO LET'S DO THIS!!

I say think of layers: this is where your wear now beauties will come in handy. This look is all about layering and neutrals. Since the temperature will be cool and not cold (yet) you can get those skirts out...no need for leggings ( let's soak this up while we can). I made use of my lightweight sleeveless cashmere top, paired it with a wool mini skirt and topped it off with this easy fatigue shirt in dark driftwood and vest from JCrew. The candy here is I get to wear my ankle boots. YAY BABE!

everything on top: JCrew (hehe, so funny)  boots: Cynthia Vincent

Layering doesn't have to be shirt under sweater. Your summer tops  can be worn with your skinnyjeans, just add blazer, button up shirt or long cardigan.  Easy, right. To have some fun I played with all neutrals and finished the look with this fatigue vest. The best part of this outfit is that 95% of it was already owned and only the shirt was new. I want you to use what you have in your closet babes!

Favorites: sweet finds under $50

I'm always on the hunt for a sweet find. You know that style that makes you want to twirl because it's full of sugar and spice and everything oh so wonderful about being a girl!! I'm a fan of all things that celebrate the joys of being a woman and clothing is one of my very fun avenues of expressing my lady like attributes. Well enough about my mantra let's get to the yummy center of this grill cheese sandwich shall we. Now I want a grill cheese ;)

This crinkled chiffon blouse is from H+M and it was a screaming deal. Click here to add this little one to your cart. The mint green and tiny floral pattern gave my look a dose of freshness. To give it a modern edge I paired it with my favorite destroyed denim shorts. In the Fall, it will be great with a leather jacket and your most loved skinny jeans.

If you want some more floral loves, I'm also eyeing this one from Asos. I tend to find the print that I love and then look at the price so it's a win win when I can find one at such a great price point. They're out there! My tip is to keep the style simple. You guys know me and my sermon of simple chic. It allows your less expensive buys to stand the test of style and time (well, at least until a dozen or so washes ( fingers crossed ;)

Here's a few of my other sweet finds and all under $50...high five or chest bump here! I love this textured dot top from JCrew in Navy...this is a wear now and later ladies and it's an additional 40% off. WOO!! Check out this fun boho vibe one from  Urban Outfitters. It can be styled for work or play.

If any of these great buys end up in your closet I would love to see how you style them.  Direct message me on Instagram @seelaurastyle or @lauratully.co. Cannot wait!! I've inserted one of my favorite quotes for the week below. Use whenever needed and I'll see you next week!! Insert a really BIG HUG here ;)

Style Game Changer: rocking sneakers

Happy as a clam moment captured by the awesome Karen of karenephoto

Let me take a moment to send a little love letter to sneakers, sneaks, kicks ;)  Dear sneakers, thank you for coming back in style like a champ. My entire wardrobe and feet thank you! :) The resurgence of comfort wear for me is an exclamation that "we"  have entered into this median of style where we can create our own definition of style. Say hello to my converse. These beauties have been with me for years and have allowed extreme comfort  amongst my style game. Peeps, I'm going to preach it all day every day. You can look great and be comfortable.  Sneakers can add a bit of sass and ease to a dress, flirty skirt (or non -flirt;) anything.

sneakers: Converse   Dress: ALC at Fancy Pants

My quick tip is to maintain a sleek profile when wearing a dress or skirt. These converse are lightweight so they don't add bulk to my feet. It allows the dress to still be feminine because it's not trying to compete with a bulky sneaker.  I'm pretty loyal to great classics.  Brands like Converse and Vans are my main go to when it comes to sneaker wear for me. I'm also currently loving on a few of the Superga styles as well for a more edgy wear.

Don't be afraid to mix your looks. This high/ low style is perfect with sneaks.  It can allow you to dress down just about anything without overdoing it.

See you next week my awesome peeps. Fall is around the corner ( I know!! ) and I have some fun, easy and oh so stylish ways to make the transition from Summer painless. MUAH :)
