It's 2018. Know your worth

Photography: Fiona Montagne

We are sometimes made to to feel that if we wait long enough somewhere along this journey we’ll find someone or something to make us feel worthy. That the creation of our worth is outside of OUR control. I will say that nothing has taught me more about defining my own sense of value and worth than realizing that it is enough to show up just as I am. We short change ourselves by believing that when we "fill in the blank", then we'll deserve that love, admiration, respect. That only then, we will be worthy. I see worthiness as a declaration of self ownership. It's the vital space you give yourself to believe that even in the most trying moments, you matter.  I'm sharing below what has helped me to write my own narrative of self worth. It's a process that unfolds each day, it's a practice.

WORDS MATTER, ESPECIALLY THE ONES YOU SAY TO YOURSELF

We've all done it. Whether it's alone in our bedroom, to a friend, a stranger or a passing thought as you glance in a mirror. The use of dismantling words that we say to ourselves or those that we've absorbed from others is destructive. So I want you to stop it!!! (Said in my sass filled Mama tone). You are in the process of creating your best self and that major dinosaur size step starts with the language you use towards yourself. Be kind, respectful and allow yourself the room to love yourself no matter what.

YOUR TRIBE MATTERS

It's simple. The company you keep should reinforce your worth ( You're amazing!); Motivate you to grow and be challenged ( Get it and you got this!!); Call you out on your bullshit ( Get it together); know when to drop it low and have fun ( Insert dance groove here). Ok the last one isn't necessary but it's certainly recommended ;) Every person that comes into your life adds an element to who you are or what you're becoming. I remember making exhausting efforts to alter what I thought others wanted me to be. It happens. I learned. Now the influence and its effect occurs on my own terms.

SHOW OTHERS THAT THEY ARE WORTHY

A kind word or action can have this transformative experience. No matter the size, it can impact how someone is feeling that day, that moment. I don't take for granted what others might be going through. This is what makes our co existing together so powerful. It grants us the permission to affect each other in the most positive way.

So I'm saying to you that you are wonderful, necessary and full of worth. Go share this with someone else.

Easy Wear: Black and White

In beautiful Cannon Beach, OR with the oh so talented photography skills of Stephanie Mballo Photography

I love a classic black and white outfit. It goes together like the best of opposites. So when it comes to this effortless wear, you can't go wrong. Effortless doesn't have to mean boring or plain. This darling white eyelet top from JCrew adds a little texture to a simple style. Oh and I can't forget to mention these loafers. LOVEEE!!! The patent leather with the stud detail adds a whole lot of edge to this look. Style has the ability to reveal or express who you are in the best way. You can show up feeling confident, fabulous and YES, comfortable. Comfort is a common thread in how I style my clients because Mama knows that if you don't feel good in, you won't wear.  These high waisted wide legged pants from The Gap ( on sale and a screaming deal) are like pajamas. These types of classic looks take the work work work work work ( I had to) out of getting dressed. As always, I've got your style back! MUAH!

Summer Style: keeping your cool

Hanging amongst these pretties captured by the talented Stephanie Mballo Photography

Yes, the temperature is rising and that means SUMMER is here in all it's glory! This Jamaican gal LOVES the heat! It hugs me and makes me feel like skipping and then twirling. However, Mama knows a girl can lose her cool when it's hotter than a mofo and all you want to do is strut your birthday suit. So I'm here to help guide you through rocking some cuteness whilst keeping your cool :)

Tee: Everlane     Shorts: JCrew

Keep it Simple

The hotter it gets the less I want to wear. So it's a balance between wearing as little as possible while maintaining our classy lady situation ;) That means keeping it simple. T-shirt and shorts are my go to for easy Summer styling. This doesn't mean that you can't add a little fun flavor. I'm rocking these darling green high waisted shorts that brings a dose of play with the ruffled details. Paired with a great staple that what we all have in our closet, a great white tee.

Think...breezy

Your clothes can be a form of natural air condition....awwwww. This can be accomplished with fabrics: linen, cotton and fit: think airy. So I stick with styles that are not restricting any part of my body ( that's not cute anyways, right). All your nooks and crannies can breath ;) Light weight dresses, cotton shorts and drapey tanks are just a few of my breezy wears.

Rejoice because it's Summer!

It goes by so fast so let's savior it as much as we can. I know it can get to the point where you want to rip off your clothes Superman style and dive into any cold liquid. However, I hold on to the patio evenings, pool parties, outdoor music and the best, just hanging with the people you love, a cold beverage in hand and late night chats. It's da best!

Keep it simple, breezy and savior the little moments. Muah!

Freezing? Get These 3 Tights

Okay my fine peeps! Let us dive right into the meat and potatoes of this blog post. The past few weeks we've been hit with a whopping dose of old man winter. I love the snow but it has now left me to covering all of my limbs and wearing boots that provide traction to the snow/ ice :) I have moments where I'm blissfuly daydreaming about a sunny meadow and twirling ;) or laying on a beach, wearing a gold bikini and sipping on something refreshing. Ok, let's focus! In the meantime, we are dealing with the reality of cold weather and fashion is not just my job, it's also my therapy. I decided to rock a skirt where my legs were no longer trapped in jeans or some thermal contraption. Plus, how awesome is this skirt?!! You and I both know that I subscribe to the mantra of  "freezing isn't cute". So let me share 3 of my favorite tights to have in your closet so that you too can have the option of showing some leg amidst winter gloom.

Sweater and socks: JCrew  Skirt: Leith  Boots: Rag and Bone, Fancy Pants  Tights: Target

Get ready to add these goodness to your shopping cart. Black tights are a great staple and this little guy comes with a fleece lining inside ( say what?!). I know right, I'm hugging you too!! Next up, charcoal gray ribbed tights. This cool number from The Loft, pairs well with colored skirts and creates a soft transition, color wise,  from skirt to tights. Lastly, a navy pair, like these from Spanx. This particular pair has a gray undertone and can work well with many colors. It also has a built in shaper that makes everything feel safe and secure ;)

Hang in there my beauties, stay warm and I will see you next week! Muah!

How To Add Some Luxe To Your Daily Style

All this luxe, captured by Karen E Photo

I'm standing in line at Fred Meyer, waiting to purchase my grocery goods. The clerk looks at me and says "what you're wearing makes me happy, it's so...chic." Okay babes, let me explain the outfit my sweet clerk was admiring. Cashmere ivory sweater with black distressed denim, snow boots (cause it's snowmaggeden in boise ;), Camel colored wool trench coat with the...wait for it...my coppery red faux fur stole. It's a saturated yummy color that screams, luxe and I am all in. I want you to add some luxury to your everyday and yes, that includes the grocery store. It doesn't have to cost a fortune, it only needs to deliver that look and feel of a million bucks ;)

Adding that extra special something to your outfit can make your day oh so better. Especially when bad vibes tries to cramp your style. I layered this velvet tank over a fitted turtleneck and paired it with worn black denim. The velvet adds another layer of luxury and it makes me feel like I'm having my own party for the day. Who doesn't love a party?!! So what do I want you to do? Those fabulous earrings that sparkle like diamond, wear them with a simple oversized cozy sweater, leggings or skinnyjeans. That fancy blouse that you love and wear only to special events. Well it now has a date with your distressed jeans. That holiday sweater that makes you feel all glam, wear it with dark gray fitted pants or denim. Everyday, ummm that's right, I said it, everyday, you deserve the opportunity to put on what makes you feel and look good.  This is my sermon people and you guys know it!!

My Morning Date with Westward Coffee

Coffee bliss with the talented/ ma babes Karen Krum of Karen E Photo ( all images)

It's early and it's not hard to tell what's on your mind once the alarm starts chirping ( do people still use alarms). My alarm is my hubby, he's a rooster. Seriously he wakes up at the same time, everyday, no matter what. Anyways, luckily it's the weekend and you can snooze once or twice before you dive into your weekend happenings. I shower and throw on some major comfy wear, laced with some style of course ( more on this outfit situation later). This weekend involved a serious coffee date with one of my babes.  We chat, eat bready things covered in sweet berry like concoctions and we sip away on delicious coffee. Coffee that makes your eyes smile at the sight  and smell of it. Coffee that requires a moment of silence as you cradle the cup in your hands and take that first sip....ya I know! It's java foreplay...get a room!! ;)  I'm sitting pretty in such a place. It's called Westward Coffee and Supply and it's the creation of mother and daughter Jessye White and Nicole Powell.

Located on Main street in downtown Boise, these babes decided to bring a fresh take to coffee lovers in Boise, Idaho. They're doing so by taking what they call their "pocket size" shop and building something that goes beyond your morning latte.

What made you decide to open a coffee shop?

Nicole: "My mom and I wanted to open a family business in Boise and had both worked in coffee. I wanted to get away from "making it" ie: big city big job big commute etc. and reconnect with the things that make me happy--people, conversations, and face to face interactions."

What does Westward bring to coffee lovers?

Nicole: "We have a different vibe than most coffee places. We are more traditional in our menu and do everything with great specificity--every cup of coffee is ground and brewed to order.  But mostly, we really know the people who frequent our shop and we strive to get to k ow the new ones. For us it's not about having the most nuanced palette or creating an environment that is complicated or intimidating, it's simply about making damn fine coffee and connecting with people in a genuine way. We like coffee and we like people so it's a natural fit.

Your space has a beautiful calm to it... tell me a little about the design concept?

Nicole: "Our space is simple and efficient partly because it is so small! We wanted something minimal because we like the idea of the never ending movement of life through the space.  The base palette is whites and ashy blonde woods because they create a perfect background for this concept. It is also reflective of what we love about Idaho. The wide open spaces, the miles of empty roads, the quiet after a snow. It's a peaceful place and we want that to show! We also have amazing photography from Rick Kuttler of our favorite places in the west."

Where does Westward fit amongst the growing trend of great coffee spots in Boise?

Nicole: "Westward is the kind of shop I fell in love with living in bigger cities like SanFrancisco and Portland. It's small, intimate and well curated. We also carry and represent Idaho roasters. We carry maps (Hailey) Doma (Coeur d'alene) and AfroPhil (boise) We are not trying to take over as a massive chain or sacrifice quality for the bottom line. We are family owned and operated and happy about that. I think we are just trying to create a nice, approachable, third wave shop where everyone is welcome to experience amazing Idaho roasters."

What's your beverage of choice?

Nicole: "A nice hot pour over!"

Nicole: "We believe that living local builds stronger communities and fosters relationships between the humans that live in them. Come in and have a cup before your next adventure or stay awhile and enjoy the atmosphere."

Don't mind if I do. There's a closeness that happens as you sit down in this modern, bright and welcoming space. It could be Nicole's charming wit or the pour-over magic she's about to deliver. I have a feeling it's both and so much more.

So now that you have your perfect latte in hand ( lucky you), lets chime in on the outfit situation. My obsession with style comes from a desperate need to be comfortable, like all the time. The audacity of me!! Merging both, especially when I style my clients is an exclamation that looking great can literally make you feel REAL good. I mean if that's not winning I don't know what is. So I work to create a fun balance with dressy and casual wear by mixing them together most of the time. No style stays in it's lane. We ALL play together. Sneakers with your lady like jacket, why the heck not?! :)

This darling sweatshirt is from JCrew and it has velvet dots. That's right, velvet!! It's cozy, dress me up or down and yes, comfy. Sweatshirts are no longer ONLY privy to being stowed in your back drawer to be removed for Netflix-athon. They can be front, center and style ready.

If you're heading to Westward shoot me a message...there's always room for good company and great coffee :)

Unicorns Wear Stripes

When I was 12 years old I thought that anything and everything was possible. After-all, I had just left my tiny world on the island of Jamaica and was now living in The United States of America. CRAZY!! As another new year slips it's way towards us I'm feeling a bit nostalgic about 2016 and all that its meant to me. I think the biggest take away was understanding more about what I think I'm capable of doing and reviving that 12 year old "I can" mindset. Adult life is so strange how it shifts the "I can do anything" ( I call this my unicorn) to "just do something". Your mind gets blown a bit when you stop making excuses and start failing at shit. Ya, that's what happens when you're all up in the "doing" part of stuff.  You mess up, learn, make progress, try harder and challenge yourself to be better. Not perfect because you and I know that exist only on IG ( those filters tho ;)

stripe sweater: JCrew   Denim: Levi    boots: Piece Unique

So I've battled with my unicorn...we believed at one time right?! Seriously, I can't be the only one. Well whatever your "unicorn" was, it was cool, you loved it and then one day it just vanished. My Mom would chime in right now and say "it call real life baby" in her very heavy Jamaican accent ( filled with Mama truth). Yes, real life chimes in but that doesn't have to be a dirty phrase. That's what's great about still believing as an adult in the "impossible", your "unicorn". You have all this "grown up" perspective to "real talk" your way through the logistics of your dream and the unicorn passion to rally your ass to go after it harder and make your purpose happen.

So as we embark on another year, I encourage you to unleash your "unicorn" and rally that passion you crave. Better yet, why not start the process right now, where you are.  I've got your back.

Comfort Wear With Style

Comfort wear can sometimes feel like dirty words in the style arena. Our hands are clasped praying that our casual everyday, throw on and go wear can live up to that sweet spot combination of  comfort and stylish. Well my awesome peeps get ready to rejoice because I have some easy style tips that will help you navigate this arena. Get ready to revel in comfort and still show up with style.

Jacket: Nike   Tee + Denim: JCrew

Say hello to my little friend denim

I know, why cant I put on some leggings. You can but a pair of great fitting denim instantly makes the outfit more pulled together. I'm rocking these straight leg front button denim from JCrew. They're a looser fit and pure comfort! I paired it with a simple white tee and my favorite go to in the shoe arsenal, ankle boots.

Layer, layer

A denim jacket, a cozy sweater, a structured cardigan, all provide a great anchor to a casual look. Your comfy casual wear is suppose to get you through your day feeling good and crossing off your "to do" list. So having the right layering piece allows you to remove a style if needed and keep it moving. I'm wearing this chic bomber from Nike.

The little details matter

Casual wear should be fuss free, so for me that means choosing my accessories carefully. My fun detail here is my gold bucket bag. So playful right!! It adds a little glam to a casual look and makes the outfit pop. So add a great scarf, earrings that add a little glam and get your day going comfortably in style :)

If You Want Happy Thoughts...Wear This

jacket: old navy    skirt: JCrew

Yep, we've all had those mornings where you've woken up and someone has splashed a downer on your happy.  It happens to the best of us. So I grab my tea and inspect my closet to see what outfit remedy will boost my mood. For me a playful print can boost even the yuckiest mood. Your thoughts matters and what you do with those thoughts matter. So, I shut it down before it takes a hold of my "mama's got things to do, outfits to create and closets to make happy" day.  I love a bold print but it can be whatever speaks to you: Polka dots, floral, stripes, watercolor, tribal. Seriously, I want you to try this. Putting on an outfit that makes you feel great can be a game changer on your mood. This is why I love my job as a personal stylist. Style can be this tiny catalyst that allows you and all your awesomeness to be fully engaged.  So, if it makes you happy, I want you to wear it :)

3 Tips To Finding Your Style

Some uber fun with the talented Harley Goul

Style! What does it mean and how can we all capture it? I see style as a creative expression of who I am that can be translated in what I wear. I love fashion and the process of putting things together in ways most people might not. That's a big part of why I'm a personal stylist. I work to help my clients navigate what THEIR style is and of course, the process has to be FUN!! We have this moment that is happening right now where we get to determine what we wear, how we look and feel about our bodies without prescribing to anyone else's agenda. Can I get an amen for that please :) Here's a few of my "go to" tips to finding your style.

jacket: adidas   tank top: JCrew   Jeans: Frame ( Fancy Pants)   Shoes: Zara

Listen to what speaks to you

No voodoo or magical chanting here. Just a real look at what styles you find yourself feeling great in. Your t-shirts and comfy pants don't count because come on, those are a given. Wearing comfy pants as I type :) It's that blouse, dress or jeans you wear all the time that makes you feel confident and looks great on you. Get more of that! It could be the blouse is a classic style, start venturing more into finding styles that speak that same thread of classic.

Save what inspires you

Yep, that Pinterest board is a great idea. I love when my clients show me their style board. It allows me to see their wishes, loves and style thread. If you see an outfit you love, take a picture of it, remove it from the magazine and pin it on a style board. This allows you to see the styles that you find yourself gravitating towards and have a great reference to use for "what to wear".

Experiment and kick fear to the curb

What's fun about fashion is the ability to change our minds on what we want to wear and look at a moments notice. It doesn't have to be this serious, I'm going to marry you commitment. There's a lot of stores that offer similar styles that are budget friendly. If there's a style you want to try, just do it.  I've got your back. Trying on, can be a pain at times but the reward is seeing what works for you. The big win here is you're taking a little "love on you" time for yourself and could potentially find your new favorite outfit simply by trying.

Favorites: sweet finds under $50

I'm always on the hunt for a sweet find. You know that style that makes you want to twirl because it's full of sugar and spice and everything oh so wonderful about being a girl!! I'm a fan of all things that celebrate the joys of being a woman and clothing is one of my very fun avenues of expressing my lady like attributes. Well enough about my mantra let's get to the yummy center of this grill cheese sandwich shall we. Now I want a grill cheese ;)

This crinkled chiffon blouse is from H+M and it was a screaming deal. Click here to add this little one to your cart. The mint green and tiny floral pattern gave my look a dose of freshness. To give it a modern edge I paired it with my favorite destroyed denim shorts. In the Fall, it will be great with a leather jacket and your most loved skinny jeans.

If you want some more floral loves, I'm also eyeing this one from Asos. I tend to find the print that I love and then look at the price so it's a win win when I can find one at such a great price point. They're out there! My tip is to keep the style simple. You guys know me and my sermon of simple chic. It allows your less expensive buys to stand the test of style and time (well, at least until a dozen or so washes ( fingers crossed ;)

Here's a few of my other sweet finds and all under $50...high five or chest bump here! I love this textured dot top from JCrew in Navy...this is a wear now and later ladies and it's an additional 40% off. WOO!! Check out this fun boho vibe one from  Urban Outfitters. It can be styled for work or play.

If any of these great buys end up in your closet I would love to see how you style them.  Direct message me on Instagram @seelaurastyle or @lauratully.co. Cannot wait!! I've inserted one of my favorite quotes for the week below. Use whenever needed and I'll see you next week!! Insert a really BIG HUG here ;)

How to wear all denim with ease

Denim on denim is one of my favorite "go to" looks in my outfit arsenal. For some, it can be a struggle to grapple this look. You're either on-board or saying "hell no". Well my peeps,  if you feel as if you're teetering, here's some of my tips to help you take the dive and it's painless. It's actually quite G-rated and packs a whole dose of style easily.

Wearing all denim really boils down to 2 things for me: denim wash and texture. Let's explore the denim wash situation. I like to pair denims that differ in wash. In the outfit I'm wearing, the top is a lighter wash than the shorts and it makes the look more intentional. In others words, it doesn't look like I'm trying to match my denim. You know how I feel about things being too matchy matchy ;)  So wear your distressed light wash denim jeans, shorts or skirt with a dark denim shirt or lightweight chambray shirt with dark wash denim bottoms.

Top: Francesca's  denim shorts: JCrew

To make wearing this look easy, I stick to styles that are simple. Each piece has very little detail or embellishment which allows for a very chic look. This darling off the shoulder top was a great find and buy at Francesca's at The Village at Meridian. So go snag one now if you love!! I can dress it up or down and it's a simple style which means, I'll love it next year. The light fabric brings me to my other tip. Vary the texture. It provides more interest and gives your look some dimension. If I'm wearing a denim that has some weight to it, I'll pair it with a light fabric chambray top to balance the look.

I know guys, it's way easier than you think. The Canadian tuxedo has been reclaimed and it's better than ever!! Here's a few images that feature some of my favorite denim on denim looks that you can use or create your own. Let me know how you rock your all denim wear and show me!!! Use the hashtag #alldenimbabe... I cannot wait!

When cuteness + comfort collides

top: JCrew  denim shorts: Forever 21   Sandals: Madewell

A really awesome thing is happening right now in fashion. You can look fantastic and guess what peeps, be comfortable. Yes!! Let's get it straight, not so comfy you're lounging hard on the sofa. I hear this word from clients all the time and my job is to show them how we can have both. Let's break down this "comfort" situation a bit. I want you to wear styles that look and feel great on your body. You want to feel comfortable and wear styles that won't sacrifice looking great. It's doable and I'll show you how.

How to keep the comfort whilst still engaging the cuteness: The things that I find a bit unusual is what I tend to gravitate towards. This darling bell sleeve top from JCrew was just that. It's fancy but in a cotton t-shirt type of feel, which brings it right back to comfort zone. Look for styles that allow you the versatility to pair with a dressed up or dressed down style. So I can easily rock this top with denim shorts or a fancy skirt. Look for prints and texture: polkadots, stripes, chevron or a modern floral. These types of tops pack a big punch for your closet and makes you look great, effortlessly. Hallelujah! :)

I'm not saying to stay away from trends but I only date trends, not marry them ;) I find the styles I love and my clients go to over and over again are the classics. Simple, chic and you won't regret the purchase 1 year later. That doesn't mean you're entering plainJaneville (I know, it's not a word but it just felt right).  It's best to look for styles that have a classic look like this stripe top but with a little fun, the bell sleeves. Include trends in small doses. So instead of an entire tassel dress, go with a darling tassel top.

Break some rules: Wearing navy and black together was a no no in the fashion rules arena. We can wave goodbye to it and rejoice. I'm wearing a navy and white stripe top with black distressed denim shorts. For me, it's all bout texture and print. The stripe is forgiving and I don't have to worry about matching. So you can pair your navy polkadot shirt or navy stripe with black and go about your fantastic day :)

Don't forget the FUN : Accessorizing is a great way to add a little bit of fun and the unexpected to your style. This darling Rebecca Minkoff backpack does just that. It's practical and brings a dose of happy in this blush color. These sunglasses are from Fetch Eyewear. I saw them in Portland and fell in love with the unique and simple style. Then I learned more about what they represent and fell head over heels in love. I am constantly searching for great style and brands that serve a  bigger purpose with fashion as the medium. 100% of the profits ( YEP, 100%) is donated to animal rescue. This makes my better world momentum uber happy. Click here to learn more about this amazing company, it's mission and drool over the many fabulous eyewear #purchase.

I have to send out a really BIG HUGE GIGANTIC HUG with a squeeze for the kind and sweet messages from my last post, Loving on U.S.A. This is what I meant about feeling like home. It's love, kindness and having each others back. Now go get you some comfy cuteness and share with me your favorite finds.

Loving on U. S. A

I moved with my family to America when I was 11 years old from the beautiful island of Jamaica. The excitement of landing in New York City and finally being where I've dreamt of so often was almost palpable. Everything was so big and different in so many ways. There was so much newness I was about to experience. It was November and I remember my Dad putting this big heavy coat on me and telling me I'll need this. Coat was a foreign term to me ;) I wore a pretty blue and white stripe dress that had a big bow on the waist. I wanted to be well dressed the moment I landed in America. To greet her and tell her how delighted I am to meet her.  My parents, my brother, my sister and I hugged each other for a long time in JFK. My Dad held my hand and we walked outside and yah, I remembered the cold. It was new but oh so welcomed. For me, there was a bit of magic in being an immigrant. I was ready to see what I could give to this country and how we could grow together.  I've learned that we are resilient, strong and that love will always win!!! I believe in this country and the diverse fiber that makes us who we are. We are complex and ever changing. Evolving and learning from the struggles and the triumphs. It's a path that allows progress and I'm so grateful we can experience it together.

I wish you all a Happy Fourth of July and thank you for allowing me to share my journey with you. It feels like home.

Swimsuits, Coverups + Margaritas

Hello Sunshine :)

The heat is on and we know what that means. We've got to get our shit together and slip on that bathing suit because ummm it's 95 degrees out and Mama's got to cool down. I know. Bathing suits can be a pain but I have some great tips to finding the styles that says  BRING IT! I've got your back!!

Stop hating on your goodness

Yes! I want you to embrace all the yummy curves and  non-curves ( I'm built like a 12 year old boy). I  know that we all have things we "ugh" about when it comes to our body but you know what, at the end of the day ( this is so my Mama talking right now) none of that matters. Mama is right! You embrace and love what you see and it will be the best thing you can add on with your swimsuit. A whole whopping dose of C O N F I D E N C E because girl, it looks good on you.

Embrace the goods you've got

If you've got great arms, show them off with a halter style, like this. If you love your legs choose a style with a higher side cut bikini, like this. Loving on the "girls" aka your breast, rock a demi style bikini top, like this. If you've got some extra on the backside ( I hate you and can I have some :)  seriously, your girl got very, very little.  I recommend a style that actually shows a bit more cheek. I know, you think you want full coverage but you don't. Check out this style.  By the way, Aerie has launched a real women, no editing editorial to feature their swimsuits (love that).

Lace cover, For Love and Lemons; Bikini, JCrew

Style it up

A coverup is a great way to add a bit of style and make you feel more pulled together when rocking a swimsuit. To avoid the frump factor I look for styles that drape well and that aren't necessarily a coverup. The For Love and Lemons ( shown above) style was perfect worn as a light jacket and I knew it would be airy enough as a swimsuit coverup. I must say I love the styles at JCrew like this one, which can be worn as a tunic or with shorts. I'm also a fan of an oversized linen shirt and a short slip dress.

Enjoy it

You're wearing a bathing suit because I'm guessing some sort of luxuriating ( it's a word) is going to happen. That means, you're heading on vacation, hanging by a pool or taking it easy in your backyard. I don't know about you but those are all awesome situations to be in.  Enjoy hanging with your peeps, stop fussing about your bikini and use the tips I've provided to help you navigate this swimwear arena. I know, I'm bossy :)

Tunic top, JCrew

So I promised you a Margarita and here it is!! Are you ready for the best margarita you've ever had?? It's called the beet margarita!! My friend Sam told me about it and I'm officially hooked. Let's just say it's Summer in a glass, with a extra side of happy. Insert Mariachi music or some Beyonce here ( whatever strikes your dancing fancy).

You are so enough

This bag is from Mulberry Press Co, a wonderful lifestyle brand that's dedicated to delivering inspiration and positivity. What's not to love about that :)

Y O U   A R E   SO   ENOUGH

Words are so powerful. I remember my husband saying to me "babe, you've got this" when we were in the first stages of me diving into launching my personal styling company. His relentless support was the exclamation that I needed to take the chance and trust myself. It's love.

The phrase "you are so enough" resonates with me, especially in those moments where I felt I was not doing enough or I feared being inadequate. I believe as women we have these endless standards that are comprised to make us feel uncertain about our capabilities. However, what I've found is that the only barometer that matters is the one that you set for yourself. I'm constantly trying to figure out what I can do better with my business to best serve my clients. For me, it's been a whole lot of learning, researching, big time listening and allowing myself to be true to who I am. Along the way, I saw this merger of me working on being a better person contributed to me being a better business person. Trust me the process never ends and the learning is endless but I think that's a great thing.

The eggs you surround yourself with matters in a BIG way so they better be good :) I have been blessed to meet some of the most intelligent, driven, passionate, kind humans who are at the top of their game in their careers. They have supported, inspired and encouraged me along the way. It's vital for me to know in my heart that I'm enough to do whatever it is that I want. However, it helps to have a village and that means surrounding myself with great eggs that are honest, kind, inspire and have some major integrity.

You are so enough to be what you want and when you have moments when you don't feel enough, which we all do, just remember you are not doing this thing all by yourself. I've got your back.

You have worth, you have purpose and you are always more than enough in this life. When we love ourselves, we make room for others to love us and share our journey. Love is a powerful thing and it starts with loving everything you already are.

How to hug in Portland

Japanese garden in Portland, OR

Okay I will fess up!! The hugging routine of Portlanders is no different from ours but I will say this I felt the love from all  the wonderful eating spots, cool boutiques, local bars (images not available ;)  and the oh so rad hotels we stayed in.

I mean hospitality oozes from every pore and that just makes this girl very happy.

Our stay in Portland, felt like this beautiful picture above taken by my girl Karen of Karen E Photography. Karen has an amazing eye and when we get the chance to work together, it's pure fun. I have so many ideas in my head and she's able to frame it perfectly.  Our trip was a combination of work and play but when your work is your play it all melts together seamlessly. We stayed at this amazing boutique hotel in downtown Portland called, The Society Hotel . It was originally built in 1881 as a boarding house for sailors. Quaint, cool and walking distance to so many yummy eating spots. Portland, you know how to treat a girl with all your amazing eats. Seriously y'all, every meal, fantastic. We mixed it up for our last night and stayed at the uber modern Hotel Eastlund. We've decided that hotel hopping was going to be a definite do on our next adventure, why not right?!!

FOODPORN:   Brunch- Eat at Broder Nord. Order the Swedish pancakes that I would describe as foreplay...yes, they're that good. If you think all tater tots are created equal- try these badboys at McMenamins- Kennedy School. It's a game changer. Toro Bravo...heaven for dinner. The dishes are served tapas style and we enjoyed a long dinner with awesome company. Hey Nicole :)

THIS AND THAT- We visited so many great shops. Local nurseries that made me want to remedy my non-green thumb; Proof that KK is a tiny little thing and Mama's a tall drink of water; Cool floors at FETCH; KK loving on our hotel bed; Visit Por que no for Mexican eating that taste like grandma's loving. A great recommendation from our friend Em.

I got to snap a shot of this beauty.

KK: Karen and I have spent a lot of time together in the last year. I get the chance to create with someone who I respect and has a bit of that oddity, like myself,  which allows for some fun outside the box happenings. She's cool, talented and knows how to take those pics. For more Karen goodness check her out at Karen E Photography and IG @karenephoto.

HELLO OUTFITS - These gold shoes were a staple. I wore them with everything on our trip...seriously, I did :)

Coat and turtleneck- JCrew; denim- Frame; Shoes- a steal at a LA vintage shop with my girl Jess.

I hope you felt the HUGS!! Every getaway fuels my passion and it connects me to what really matters. I get so excited to share with you all my cool finds and loves. If it helps me grow, fuels my passion, enlightened a new perspective and allow a cute outfit to happen, yep, I'm sharing it with you. Thank you for allowing me to do that. It's your hug to me :)

The truth about leggings

Exploring Portland's Japanese Garden :)

When I see styles I love, I react in a few ways. Screams of joy, a happy dance and the outfits, oh the outfits y'all. Mama see's all the many ways one can wear this peice and how I can bring a fresh take on rocking it. Leggings, I will admit, I wasn't a huge fan. However, never say never ;) Leggings can go bad real fast worn the wrong way. I won't harp on the unsavory details of what not to do whilst wearing leggings but Mama will certainly give you my tips to rocking them in oh so cute ways.

When I wear leggings it's all about finding that balance between comfort and looking pulled together. With that said, my first go to tip is to elevate your look by wearing something a little dressier with your leggings. In this case I'm rocking my gold oxfords. I know I'll be buried in something gold, I just LOVEEE!! I mean, rocking it certainly ups my swagger ( which we all need, right :) Ok, I digressed from the legging situation.

Proportion matters. Leggings for me is that style where the butt check happens on a regular when being worn. As in, can you see my butt? Is my shirt long enough to cover said butt :) The shirt should be long enough to cover your derriere but not so long that if you raised your hands in a "raise the roof" manner and we still don't see your booty, that means the top is too long. The top should cover the front assets completely. So if you want to wear a crop top layer it with a longer shirt, left open in a jacket like style. I mean this one ;)

If it's too thin, feed it! Your leggings that is. Fabrics that have a bit more substance make your leggings fit better ( no bagging out) and holds all the goodness in ( looks fabulous). We like that! This particular one is a moto style and has a great mix of mostly Rayon, some Nylon and a bit of Lycra. It's a few years old and still works great. I couldn't find this brand to feature but I've provided my other loves. I'm a fan of this one and these.  The price is great and you can wear the JCrew ones with boots come winter.  Yes please :)

I believe in a lot of things, a little magic never hurts" Maddie, 10 years old

I have a bonus post coming your way tomorrow. It's all about my Portland work and play adventure with my girl Karen of Karen E Photography. If you want to learn how to hug in Portland I suggest you visit me tomorrow :) Cool as hell places to stay, pretty pretty photos and oh yeah, the food!! Need I say more. The love is real!! MUAH!

Wear What You Love

I'm wearing a vintage high waisted gold pencil skirt with gold oxfords and it makes me happy.  It makes me want to drop it like it's hot ( aka dance) and walk with an extra skip in my step. Seriously, putting on this outfit sets my day. It says "girrrlll, it's gonna be a good one."  Wearing what you love is a blissful combination of self- expression embodied with whatever kind of sass you want to deliver. I can sense when my clients are not comfortable in an outfit, even when their words say otherwise. The body is incredibly expressive.  I pay very close attention to those movements that tells me we're out of the "comfort zone" or the uncertainty that comes with newness... "can I really wear this."  One of my goals as a personal stylist is to navigate style in a way that highlights the best path for my client in the simplest way.

Style is ubiquitous, which fuels and inspire self-expression in so many ways.

So what does it take to wear what you love? I have to admit, when it comes to style I have a very strange six sense. My clients call me the "outfit whisperer"  :) because I  see the outfits I want on them. For myself, I learned all about what looks work on me and it doesn't hurt that I'm obsessed with fashion and style. So, this allowed me to discard any other stuff that comes along my way that I know won't work and spend that time on better things. I also listen to myself ( you know that gut feeling that says, take that BLANK off, it is not the one). I'm also blessed with  fantastic peeps who deliver honest critique with a hug :)

Wearing what you love, with the emphasis on YOU. I had the privilege to style this fantastic Mom of 5, yes 5 kiddos :) She has amazing curves and struggled to embrace said curves and find styles that worked for her. We all have our own body struggles. What I saw when we met was her amazing waist, great legs and wonderful shoulders. My mission- liberate all that goodness so that she too can begin to appreciate them in styles that compliment all those great assets. In turn, feeling great in what she wears.

Wearing what you love is REALLY loving you in what you wear. What's not to love about that :)

Easy ways to rock neutrals

Wearing neutrals just makes me swoon about summer. It's light, fresh and modern. Summer will be here in about 6 weeks peeps and I'm counting :)  Wearing all neutrals is about texture and picking the right shade. I'm a fan of whites, ivory and grays. Since the weather will be slipping on its fancy 70 degrees and up temperature our way,  here are a few of my "how to" tips to rocking all neutrals and keeping your cool.

Texture is your friend. I'm wearing these  ivory denim shorts from JCrew and paired it with this darling eyelet  top from Banana Republic. The eyelet gives this color palette some texture and makes the outfit more playful. By the way guys, this top was on super sale in the store so go snag yourself one now :) The ivory top was a bit darker than the shorts but this is why having texture is so great. The shades do not have to be an exact match, which makes pairing easy. Mama likes that!

Accessorize to add a little something something ;) I paired this grey bag from JCrew ( so cute right) and my little coral puffball name Javi  ;)  to give the all ivory look some anchor. When it comes to styling myself and my clients, looking great should be a simple and easy process. Neutrals allows this ease because you don't have to worry about matching or coordinating since you're using the same color palette. They all play nicely with each other.

If you want to wear all white, choose white denim and a silk-like top or knitted top with a smooth cotton bottoms. If you want an all grey look, wear light grey on top, dark on the bottom with a fun printed bag. Are you guys picking up what I'm throwing down?! Wonderful!! Now go and get your style on. MUAH!! :)
