Freezing? Get These 3 Tights

Okay my fine peeps! Let us dive right into the meat and potatoes of this blog post. The past few weeks we've been hit with a whopping dose of old man winter. I love the snow but it has now left me to covering all of my limbs and wearing boots that provide traction to the snow/ ice :) I have moments where I'm blissfuly daydreaming about a sunny meadow and twirling ;) or laying on a beach, wearing a gold bikini and sipping on something refreshing. Ok, let's focus! In the meantime, we are dealing with the reality of cold weather and fashion is not just my job, it's also my therapy. I decided to rock a skirt where my legs were no longer trapped in jeans or some thermal contraption. Plus, how awesome is this skirt?!! You and I both know that I subscribe to the mantra of  "freezing isn't cute". So let me share 3 of my favorite tights to have in your closet so that you too can have the option of showing some leg amidst winter gloom.

Sweater and socks: JCrew  Skirt: Leith  Boots: Rag and Bone, Fancy Pants  Tights: Target

Get ready to add these goodness to your shopping cart. Black tights are a great staple and this little guy comes with a fleece lining inside ( say what?!). I know right, I'm hugging you too!! Next up, charcoal gray ribbed tights. This cool number from The Loft, pairs well with colored skirts and creates a soft transition, color wise,  from skirt to tights. Lastly, a navy pair, like these from Spanx. This particular pair has a gray undertone and can work well with many colors. It also has a built in shaper that makes everything feel safe and secure ;)

Hang in there my beauties, stay warm and I will see you next week! Muah!

How To Add Some Luxe To Your Daily Style

All this luxe, captured by Karen E Photo

I'm standing in line at Fred Meyer, waiting to purchase my grocery goods. The clerk looks at me and says "what you're wearing makes me happy, it's so...chic." Okay babes, let me explain the outfit my sweet clerk was admiring. Cashmere ivory sweater with black distressed denim, snow boots (cause it's snowmaggeden in boise ;), Camel colored wool trench coat with the...wait for it...my coppery red faux fur stole. It's a saturated yummy color that screams, luxe and I am all in. I want you to add some luxury to your everyday and yes, that includes the grocery store. It doesn't have to cost a fortune, it only needs to deliver that look and feel of a million bucks ;)

Adding that extra special something to your outfit can make your day oh so better. Especially when bad vibes tries to cramp your style. I layered this velvet tank over a fitted turtleneck and paired it with worn black denim. The velvet adds another layer of luxury and it makes me feel like I'm having my own party for the day. Who doesn't love a party?!! So what do I want you to do? Those fabulous earrings that sparkle like diamond, wear them with a simple oversized cozy sweater, leggings or skinnyjeans. That fancy blouse that you love and wear only to special events. Well it now has a date with your distressed jeans. That holiday sweater that makes you feel all glam, wear it with dark gray fitted pants or denim. Everyday, ummm that's right, I said it, everyday, you deserve the opportunity to put on what makes you feel and look good.  This is my sermon people and you guys know it!!

THE GOODS

Faux fur stole- JCrew; mock Turtleneck- Forever 21; velvet tank- JCrew; denim- Mothers ( Fancy Pants); Shoes- Adrianna Papell

Sweater Therapy

Snuggled in between Soul/Funk and Reggae at The Record Exchange felt quite fitting :)

The current temperature situation in Boise, Idaho is 10 degrees. What that means my fine folks is that it's f-bomb cold! As I've discussed a few post back, there is nothing cute about shivering. So let's figure out how to add a little dose of goodness that helps to ease the impact of these frigid temperatures. I want something that says "hey girl, I've got your front, your back and I'm here to keep you cozy." ( this is said in an ultra smooth Barry White voice :) That leads me to coveting sweaters that do double duty: apply warmth to my body and of course, keeps my style game happy.

This sweater tho!! This lace up detail is a a trend that I'm loving on because it offers a cool detail to an otherwise simple sweater.  That's right, my cozy sweater game just got upgraded and it feels so right. This goodness is by Endless Rose. It's a 100% wool but not itchy.  Here's a few other styles that will help us get through what we have affectionally call snowmageddon in Idaho (hehe) This cuteness from JCrew. I mean, stripes and warmth ( YES!!) and this v-neck cozy sweater from Topshop. Stay warm and safe my peeps and I'll see you next week for more fashion filled goodness. Let me know if you snag any of these styles and how you plan on rocking them. Hugging on YOU!!!

Wearing Courage

Captured by Jessica of Jleephotos in NYC                                             dress: For Love and Lemons

I'm perfectly fine with the unfinished parts of who I am. I'm working on it over here (said in my most pristine NYC accent :) It's 2017. All shiny and new, ready to gift us some teachable experiences. All of which adds up to complete these unfinished parts, in some way or another. Along this journey, I'm working on a few things. Reviving my unicorn spirit ( read blog post here) and nurturing courage. Yep, I want to treat courage like it owes me money. Stalk it relentlessly until it pays up...BIG TIME!

For me courage feeds and fuels freedom. It creates a momentum that allows us to push beyond where we are, towards where we dare to be. I want it to infiltrate all that we do. How and who we love, the way we raise our children, our space in this world, our voice, what we choose to wear,  our passions, our purpose. These are filled and fulfilled through courage. Those unfinished parts aren't bad things. We're learning everyday, figuring out how to be better than the day before. Finding the courage to ask for what we seek; listen for the truth and throw flag on the bullshit; love hard because we know how great it can be to have it ( so good); fail knowing that we put our all in and try again; high five our victories and get ready for the next round. These courage filled experiences allows us to fill in the gaps, to write our own sentence.

We are surrounded by plenty of things that try to tell us who and what we should be. Courage is recognizing that undeniable need to JUST be yourself...it's freedom. We know it the moment we walk away from the asshole who was treating us wrong ( we're ladies, ok), apply for that position that challenges us and show up because we're worthy.

Happy New Year my friends! Cheers to you and your relentless courage.

My Style Game For Making Winter My BFF

Winter bliss with Karen from Karen E Photos

There's nothing cute about being cold. Shivering as you power walk your way to your destination...f-bombing along the way as the chill factor expresses itself all over your body. Brrrrrr!!!! Winter is here babes  and he's going to try and have his way with you by willing you to flannel and smartwool everything. So let's try to keep it together and not let old man winter steal our style thunder.  So I've implemented a few key staples that allows me to navigate these frigid temperatures, snow, ice, sleet...whatever winter wants to throw my way. Are you ready to get cozy and maintain your cuteness? Snag these.

Real winter means a real coat. Yes, it can look great and keep you warm because we no longer want to experience the f-bomb walk to our destination anymore right....can I get an amen?! Wool is my friend or a friendly puffer. The one I'm rocking is an oldie but goodie from JCrew. There's a few yummy styles that are a must like this and this and you can't beat the price. Oh hey warm and stylish friend.

Cover those digits! Gloves are making their chic debut and keeping their purpose intact. That's right, your hands won't freeze. I found these beauts at Banana Republic and they have that cool smartphone sensitive fabric that allows me to tap, swipe and dial away. No frozen digits here.

Layer like a MOFO. If this sounds familiar it's because it's part of my style sermon ( preaching here). Layering is your friend. Today I've donned a fitted turtleneck under this adorable reindeer wool v-neck sweater. It does two things: it gives me the option of removing a layer if needed and I really can't handle wool (well some wool) directly on my skin so this way I can stay warm and not feel like my skin is about to burst into flames.

These boots are made for snow. Yes I will slip on my full of flavor ankle boots and trot along my merry way until I hit an ice patch that teaches me a lesson. Ouch!! Those lessons I don't want to repeat. Of course we can rock our booties, boots and other goodness in winter but when there's 4 inches of snow on the ground...let's keep it real here folks. We're friends. How cute are these Sperry Topsiders tho?!! Cozy, practical, stylish and I can skip in the snow if I wanted to. Seriously watch me skip.

Are we warm and cozy? I hope so. Thank you so much for all your love and support, it fuels me! As we head into 2017 I'll make certain to bring more of the goodness for you filled with love, purpose and a whopping dose of style. Happy New Year my peeps!!

When I Said Yes To Love

There was this time when I thought I knew exactly the type of man I was going to marry.  We all have "the list"...you know.... tall, handsome, funny, kind, gentleman, giver, handy, well-dressed, superman, passionate....I could go on and on and on. Then I met James and the list got a bit fuzzy ;)  Add on stubborn, loner, doesn't care about stuff/ things ( seriously if it was up to him he would have 5 shirts and 5 pants). He was this long haired, hippie guy who was a bit odd,  interesting, ruggedly handsome and he really wanted to know me. Not in the "hey girl, can I get your digits" kind of way ( yah, we've met that guy....eewww). We just talked and talked about everything and anything. He was refreshing and I wanted to know everything about him. It also made me uncomfortable because I've never met anyone who was so comfortable in his own skin. Beating to his own drum or kicking his own hacky sack :) We are opposites attracting in the most exquisitely extreme sense. This flannel that he wore...I was not familiar. The direct way he asked me out....say what?! Yet all along, I was already at YES.

YES to moving across the country to be with you. YES, I will spend the rest of my life with you. YES to letting go and braving the unknown because that is the sweetness of love. The relentless want and need to be with another human. The complex way we at times can't control how it chooses to pan out...it dares to choose for us. The will we must have to keep our sanity in this union, together yet still our own person. 11 years together, 9 years of marriage and a life built together that reminds me that growth is what happens when you allow others to enrich you. I became stronger more certain of who I am and saw that the journey is the bliss. The memories we've created, the moments triggered by the little things and best of all, Maddie. A little girl in my world since she was a month old, who's given me pure meaningful, fulfilling love.

He's still my mountain man and remains the same version of who I met 11 years ago but with more clarity. More certain of who he is and allowing me to see all of him. I see him. He sees me. I try not to edit who he is...socks with sandals, yah, I'll pick my battles. He sees me. Yes I'm wearing a blush pink tulle skirt with a denim shirt and heading to the grocery store. I'm allowing things to come to light that helps me figure out each day how to be a better person, stepmom, wife, friend, me.

This day was so special not just because we got to celebrate our love but we were surrounded by those that gave love through their passions.  The photography magic of Ben and Joella made all of our visions come to life. The botanical bliss created by Flowers at Will made the beauty around us even more spectacular. The delightful creations that made our taste palate happy by Boise's Bakery. The incredible table scape and attention to the tiniest details by Pottery Barn Boise made our day beam with life. The flawless dress that draped my body made possible by LaNeige Bridal. The perfect makeup by the fabulous Blush by Jamie Rose made me feel like my most beautiful self. Our resourceful and awesome Sprout design_ Idaho who helped to coordinate this vision that was once in my head. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world to have the opportunity to style one of the best days of our lives, surrounded by some talented magic makers. Thank you for coming along this journey with me.

My Morning Date with Westward Coffee

Coffee bliss with the talented/ ma babes Karen Krum of Karen E Photo ( all images)

It's early and it's not hard to tell what's on your mind once the alarm starts chirping ( do people still use alarms). My alarm is my hubby, he's a rooster. Seriously he wakes up at the same time, everyday, no matter what. Anyways, luckily it's the weekend and you can snooze once or twice before you dive into your weekend happenings. I shower and throw on some major comfy wear, laced with some style of course ( more on this outfit situation later). This weekend involved a serious coffee date with one of my babes.  We chat, eat bready things covered in sweet berry like concoctions and we sip away on delicious coffee. Coffee that makes your eyes smile at the sight  and smell of it. Coffee that requires a moment of silence as you cradle the cup in your hands and take that first sip....ya I know! It's java foreplay...get a room!! ;)  I'm sitting pretty in such a place. It's called Westward Coffee and Supply and it's the creation of mother and daughter Jessye White and Nicole Powell.

Located on Main street in downtown Boise, these babes decided to bring a fresh take to coffee lovers in Boise, Idaho. They're doing so by taking what they call their "pocket size" shop and building something that goes beyond your morning latte.

What made you decide to open a coffee shop?

Nicole: "My mom and I wanted to open a family business in Boise and had both worked in coffee. I wanted to get away from "making it" ie: big city big job big commute etc. and reconnect with the things that make me happy--people, conversations, and face to face interactions."

What does Westward bring to coffee lovers?

Nicole: "We have a different vibe than most coffee places. We are more traditional in our menu and do everything with great specificity--every cup of coffee is ground and brewed to order.  But mostly, we really know the people who frequent our shop and we strive to get to k ow the new ones. For us it's not about having the most nuanced palette or creating an environment that is complicated or intimidating, it's simply about making damn fine coffee and connecting with people in a genuine way. We like coffee and we like people so it's a natural fit.

Your space has a beautiful calm to it... tell me a little about the design concept?

Nicole: "Our space is simple and efficient partly because it is so small! We wanted something minimal because we like the idea of the never ending movement of life through the space.  The base palette is whites and ashy blonde woods because they create a perfect background for this concept. It is also reflective of what we love about Idaho. The wide open spaces, the miles of empty roads, the quiet after a snow. It's a peaceful place and we want that to show! We also have amazing photography from Rick Kuttler of our favorite places in the west."

Where does Westward fit amongst the growing trend of great coffee spots in Boise?

Nicole: "Westward is the kind of shop I fell in love with living in bigger cities like SanFrancisco and Portland. It's small, intimate and well curated. We also carry and represent Idaho roasters. We carry maps (Hailey) Doma (Coeur d'alene) and AfroPhil (boise) We are not trying to take over as a massive chain or sacrifice quality for the bottom line. We are family owned and operated and happy about that. I think we are just trying to create a nice, approachable, third wave shop where everyone is welcome to experience amazing Idaho roasters."

What's your beverage of choice?

Nicole: "A nice hot pour over!"

Nicole: "We believe that living local builds stronger communities and fosters relationships between the humans that live in them. Come in and have a cup before your next adventure or stay awhile and enjoy the atmosphere."

Don't mind if I do. There's a closeness that happens as you sit down in this modern, bright and welcoming space. It could be Nicole's charming wit or the pour-over magic she's about to deliver. I have a feeling it's both and so much more.

So now that you have your perfect latte in hand ( lucky you), lets chime in on the outfit situation. My obsession with style comes from a desperate need to be comfortable, like all the time. The audacity of me!! Merging both, especially when I style my clients is an exclamation that looking great can literally make you feel REAL good. I mean if that's not winning I don't know what is. So I work to create a fun balance with dressy and casual wear by mixing them together most of the time. No style stays in it's lane. We ALL play together. Sneakers with your lady like jacket, why the heck not?! :)

This darling sweatshirt is from JCrew and it has velvet dots. That's right, velvet!! It's cozy, dress me up or down and yes, comfy. Sweatshirts are no longer ONLY privy to being stowed in your back drawer to be removed for Netflix-athon. They can be front, center and style ready.

If you're heading to Westward shoot me a message...there's always room for good company and great coffee :)

Unicorns Wear Stripes

When I was 12 years old I thought that anything and everything was possible. After-all, I had just left my tiny world on the island of Jamaica and was now living in The United States of America. CRAZY!! As another new year slips it's way towards us I'm feeling a bit nostalgic about 2016 and all that its meant to me. I think the biggest take away was understanding more about what I think I'm capable of doing and reviving that 12 year old "I can" mindset. Adult life is so strange how it shifts the "I can do anything" ( I call this my unicorn) to "just do something". Your mind gets blown a bit when you stop making excuses and start failing at shit. Ya, that's what happens when you're all up in the "doing" part of stuff.  You mess up, learn, make progress, try harder and challenge yourself to be better. Not perfect because you and I know that exist only on IG ( those filters tho ;)

stripe sweater: JCrew   Denim: Levi    boots: Piece Unique

So I've battled with my unicorn...we believed at one time right?! Seriously, I can't be the only one. Well whatever your "unicorn" was, it was cool, you loved it and then one day it just vanished. My Mom would chime in right now and say "it call real life baby" in her very heavy Jamaican accent ( filled with Mama truth). Yes, real life chimes in but that doesn't have to be a dirty phrase. That's what's great about still believing as an adult in the "impossible", your "unicorn". You have all this "grown up" perspective to "real talk" your way through the logistics of your dream and the unicorn passion to rally your ass to go after it harder and make your purpose happen.

So as we embark on another year, I encourage you to unleash your "unicorn" and rally that passion you crave. Better yet, why not start the process right now, where you are.  I've got your back.

Cozy Sweater Goals

All photos by the darling, sweet and talented Toni of sydneystudiosandco

If you're anything like me, the start of the dropped temperatures, has me dreaming of cozying up in the best way. That usually includes busting out my old favorites in the sweater arena and finding those new ones that'll keep Mama going warmly and stylishly. I'm what you called chill factor challenged, which means, I don't like being cold, not one bit.  I think of the many many times I ask my hubby to turn the heat up ( because I'm incapable of doing it myself ;)  or making sure I have a good cardigan, jacket,  something to throw over myself, just in case.  So here's a few of my favorite sweater styles to tackle old man winter.

This cozy number and myself was featured in the launch of My Style Boise winter lookbook. There's nothing I love more than sharing the goodness with you guys and this fabulous duo, Marissa and Toni,  are creating a wonderful platform to do just that! Click here to view the first style guide that shows all the details on this look, the other lovelies featured and also our local shops for getting these styles. Can we say hello outfits?!!

This Vince, black cashmere sweater pairs well with just about anything and the funnel neck adds a fun modern edge. It's cozy, chic and will be my "go to" this Fall/Winter. The denim skirt was such a sweet find. You just can't go wrong with classic denim. This particular style is a bit shorter but packed with a whole dose of class because it's not too fitted. I love finding styles that do double duty. I can wear it Spring, Summer and Fall, just add a cool legging or tights and the cuteness continues! I found both of these beauts at Fancy Pants in downtown Boise.

Want more of what I'm loving on in the sweater world?? There's a lot but right now click here and here to check out two of the sweater styles on my radar. The first at H & M and this playful one at Topshop. Did I mention they're way under a $100, yes please! Let me know if you snag any of the styles shown. Stay warm my friends!

My Journey Through the Land of "Be Yourself"

"the less you try to fit in, the better you fit with yourself" lt

This day of giving thanks marks the 1 year anniversary since the launch of my blog and personal styling company, Laura Tully, LLC. It has been an incredible year filled with fantastic, challenging, self-checking, heart filled, blissful and teachable moments. I wanted to send each and every one of you a dinosaur size THANK YOU from the bottom of my ankle boots to the tippy top of my curly poof. The journey of figuring out what purpose I can serve is never-ending but became more clear once I stopped allowing my fears to get in the way.  It was realizing that I could show up, just as I am, right now and begin. This momentum became fueled by an incredible group of women, friends and my hubby who supported, listened and allowed me to let go and dive in. We are given many gifts in this world and I've witnessed the magic that unfolds when we empower each other.

This blog has become an instrument not just to celebrate the goodness of rocking a fabulous outfit but also to package that with becoming our best selves. It's a journey we are all taking. Along the way, the lessons that brought value are those that I share with you. Being yourself becomes more than just celebrating all that you are, flaws and all. It also creates tentacles to see others as they are. As I began meeting more and more amazing women, my mission, purpose and drive became more clear. I wanted each and every woman that I meet and style to know that she is capable, deliberately strong and can OWN what she brings and puts out into this world. The outfit becomes this tiny catalyst that engages all that she can create and with that confidence, she can take flight.

Your responses, comments and yummy hugs, makes my freaking day! Thank you for showing up and giving me LOVE! I will keep the goodness coming because mama will always show up for you. Enjoy the quality time with your peeps and save room for desert. If your rocking some high waisted denim like I am, everything will be cool my friends ;)

Comfort Wear With Style

Comfort wear can sometimes feel like dirty words in the style arena. Our hands are clasped praying that our casual everyday, throw on and go wear can live up to that sweet spot combination of  comfort and stylish. Well my awesome peeps get ready to rejoice because I have some easy style tips that will help you navigate this arena. Get ready to revel in comfort and still show up with style.

Jacket: Nike   Tee + Denim: JCrew

Say hello to my little friend denim

I know, why cant I put on some leggings. You can but a pair of great fitting denim instantly makes the outfit more pulled together. I'm rocking these straight leg front button denim from JCrew. They're a looser fit and pure comfort! I paired it with a simple white tee and my favorite go to in the shoe arsenal, ankle boots.

Layer, layer

A denim jacket, a cozy sweater, a structured cardigan, all provide a great anchor to a casual look. Your comfy casual wear is suppose to get you through your day feeling good and crossing off your "to do" list. So having the right layering piece allows you to remove a style if needed and keep it moving. I'm wearing this chic bomber from Nike.

The little details matter

Casual wear should be fuss free, so for me that means choosing my accessories carefully. My fun detail here is my gold bucket bag. So playful right!! It adds a little glam to a casual look and makes the outfit pop. So add a great scarf, earrings that add a little glam and get your day going comfortably in style :)

Wardrobe Time Saver: The Classic White Shirt

When you're rushing to get out the door, wardrobe staples will be your hallelujah "wear this" saver! Classic, timeless, easy and it looks good on you, yep that's what great wardrobe staples provide. That's pretty much what I look for when it comes to creating a cohesive wardrobe. On days when I can't even think about upping the cuteness, classics like this white shirt, swoop in, saving my outfit and sanity. The tuxedo style of this shirt adds a polished look to a great basic. Time savers like this allows me to get dress fast and have a look that still makes me feel good. That's the whole point right, you gotta feel good in it. I finished the look with some distressed skinny jeans ( you can easily go with classic dark wash denim) and a few fun bracelets. I'm out the door and I hope you are as well ready to tackle your day like a boss.  Have a fabulous one my awesome peeps.

If You Want Happy Thoughts...Wear This

jacket: old navy    skirt: JCrew

Yep, we've all had those mornings where you've woken up and someone has splashed a downer on your happy.  It happens to the best of us. So I grab my tea and inspect my closet to see what outfit remedy will boost my mood. For me a playful print can boost even the yuckiest mood. Your thoughts matters and what you do with those thoughts matter. So, I shut it down before it takes a hold of my "mama's got things to do, outfits to create and closets to make happy" day.  I love a bold print but it can be whatever speaks to you: Polka dots, floral, stripes, watercolor, tribal. Seriously, I want you to try this. Putting on an outfit that makes you feel great can be a game changer on your mood. This is why I love my job as a personal stylist. Style can be this tiny catalyst that allows you and all your awesomeness to be fully engaged.  So, if it makes you happy, I want you to wear it :)

Why a "Sweater Dress" Will Change Your Outlook on Life

Nothing beats standing in the middle of 5th Ave, NYC vibing with the very talented J.Lee Photos

This little number is called a sweater dress. It's my new "bff", "cheerleader" and we are seriously dating ;) Sometimes you put on an outfit and it resonates with something deeper inside you. For me this sweater dress does just that. It just makes me feel good!! I'm not talking that "oh that's cute" good, I'm talking about that "hello, hot sauce lady" good ;)  Let me explain. It took me a long time to get to this point where I felt comfortable in my own skin. It's a process for most of us. I say, find the awesome parts that you LOVE and celebrate them like a mofo.

This sweater dress is by Philanthropy and purchased from our local boutique Piece Unique in downtown Boise. The first time I slipped it on, I felt a little magic happen. Anything form fitting was always a challenge for me but I've worked through my mess of loving all of me and this dress slow clapped me to feeling pretty darn good about rocking a fitted dress. So what the hell do I want from you??? I want you to find that style that will be your cheerleader, feeling like a boss, happy to be you outfit. If it's this dress, babes you know where to get it! Whatever it is, grant yourself the permission to appreciate you and all your womanly glory. You've got great curves, let them shine; awesome legs, hello fabulous skirt; great arms, you might never wear anything with sleeves again. The point is, we can and should be at the forefront of celebrating ourselves first.

Becoming My Best Self From Being a Stepmom

It starts with hearing a great beat. Hips sway, feet tapping and I nod my head left to right, right to left. She throws her hand in the air like she just don't care. We look at each other and we know it's about to go down. The volume gets cranked up higher and the dance party ensues. Cooper our cat clears the area quickly. Let's just say he frowns on participating. We laugh hard. Sometimes we're on a stage belting out the tunes ( off key and blissfully committed),  sometimes its dancing our hearts out at our own private party ( moves like jagger or sort of). We collapse on the floor, giggling , maybe throwing an exhausted hive five and then we just lay for a bit. That's just one of the many moments that makes me joyful to have my stepdaughter Maddie in my life.

The pictures taken are mostly captured by this tiny human that reminds me that life is best lived dancing a bit more, laughing a bit longer and to always choose the chocolate cupcake ( cuz it's yum!!). For her 11th birthday, Britney ( Maddie's Mom) and I surprised her by granting her many request for a girls trip. We both get a bit mushy at the thought of her wanting to hang out with us, so our plan is to shamelessly take full advantage if it for as long as we can. I wanted to share the deeper meaning behind what has helped me to develop this relationship with Britney and of course the fun pictures of our trip :) As my life continues to change, so do my roles as a wife, stepmom, business owner, friend and person. Which for me was finding my own balance and knowing that struggles are just as valuable in asserting that balance. I pay more attention to the journey  ( and continue to learn) because it dishes out some real knowledge. Some of these lessons unexpectedly taught by my Maddie cakes.

The magic is in the effort

I became a Stepmom 11 years ago  and it redefined so much of what I thought love meant. Really, what I thought my life would look like. Husband, wife, child. It challenged me to see beyond what I thought was normal family life and insisted that we as a family step up to the plate repeatedly. There's no special trick to the relationship that we've developed between myself and Maddie's mom Brit. The journey took effort and allowing ourselves to see beyond the "I want right now" towards "what's the best for this little person we all love." It made the uncertainties a bit clearer because we got on the same page. A whole bunch of people dedicated to raising a human that will be make efforts to be her best self.

Take the high road and wear something cute

At times it easier said then done. At times is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious hard to take the high road. So I keep in mind that the low roads come stacked with baggage and distasteful consequences. Which I prefer not to include in my world. So I take a breather and step up to the plate with words that won't cause more hurt, diffuses and helps to some sort of solution. By the way, this is always a work in progress but it gets easier because you see why it's worth it.

Love is a game-changer

She's kind, creative, always asking questions and never stops talking. She interrupts adult conversations because she wants to be part of the chatter, takes forever to get dress and let's not even talk about how long it takes her to eat. She paints, draws, creates a magical story on a whim and leaves notes that make me melt every time. She loves to help me cook which takes longer but so worth it. She still wants to hang out with me so she's all up in my business :) She's not a baby anymore so her tween attitude flares up every now and then and it makes me give her the look my Mom use to give me. You know that look that says "child don't you even". She's my little fashion assistant and have told me she'll receive all my clothes when she grows up. She tells me to put my phone down when we talk so I REALLY listen and grabs my hands as we're walking just because. I love her to pieces and this love gives me the freedom to take in the unpretty moments because the good ones, always trump. Love makes me recognize that my mess ups for today is just as valuable to my victories of tomorrow. The learning is endless, luckily I have this amazing little human in my world and we will guide each other along the way.

I've been fueled by the positive responses and know that I'm not alone. I would LOVE  to hear how you work through life as a blended family and the teachings it's given to you. As always, I'm listening.

4 Pieces That Creates Outfit Wow

Photography bliss with the uber talented Denise of Studio Boise

"Mmmmmm".... that's the sound I sometimes I make when I see a style that will "up" my wardrobe game. Yep, that's the same "mmmm" sound that Homer Simpson makes as he embarks on a deliciously glazed donut. Now I want a donut...okay let's focus people. What's all this about other than the need to now eat a donut?! Well my awesome peeps, it's about 4 styles that we've all seen that can make an ordinary outfit climb the "wow" scale.

1. Stripe top                       2. Pencil skirt                    3. Blazer             4. Ankle boots

These styles are classic, plays well with other pieces, looks great on every shape and my fave, affordable!

Stripe Top

I have yet to meet a stripe top that I didn't love. I mean, it's so good!!! The DNA of a stripe top: creates an automatic classic look, adds pattern/ interest and can be found in a price range that doesn't break the style bank. I went with this fitted bodysuit from Nordstorm Rack that was a major score. I'm talking under $10 people!

Pencil Skirt

Don't be scared as I mention this style. The game is changing on pencil skirts. That means there are so many more styles out there to flatter those yummy curves or in my case lack thereof.  It's classic ( see the trend here) and allows you to inject a feminine style which can be edged up by changing up the texture or pattern. This luscious mustard suede skirt I'm wearing is by Topshop and also a great find from Nordstorm Rack. This style is a bit high waisted which makes this look scream chic and it's so comfy!!

Blazer

Oh the fun to be had with blazers. Get out there and just try on a few. It can be tailored or boyfriendy ( aka loose fit). Whichever you choose, it'll bring a serious dose of style to your looks. The bevy of prices can vary but it really comes down to fit. If it looks great, get it!! I'm wearing a great find by Rag and Bone that I snagged on sale at Fancy Pants in downtown Boise. I've worn this blazer with shorts, denim, over a dress....I could go on. The masculine element of a blazer paired with all of our ladylike assets screams style wow....yes please!

I was probably texting you ;)

Ankle boots

You guys know that I will preach it all day every day...I refuse to be uncomfortable! Why? Because there is so many styles out there that provide comfort and yasss girlll, looks amazing!! One of my go to in my shoe arena is a great pair of ankle boot!! Comfy, versatile and provides a modern fresh look to any outfit. I'm a fan of a lower ankle boot like these when wearing skirts. They show off the ankle and creates a leaner silhouette.  These are one of my new favorite pairs on heavy rotation from Target. YASS!! Target. That's the great thing about style, you can find it any and everywhere.

If you snag any of these styles let me know!! I love LOVE hearing your comments and feedback. It keeps this poofy hair gal on her style toes ;)

How To Transition Your Summer Dress Into Fall

Saying goodbye to Summer is never an easy step for me. I love the heat but my lure for ankle boots, cozy sweaters and latte bliss gives me that extra nudge I need to get excited for Fall. I'm always trying to figure out how to make the most out of every piece that I buy. This beautiful Summer dress by Alice and Olivia is no exception. I saw this dress at Fancy Pants in downtown Boise and knew that it was meant to be. I had the chance to wear it a few times this Summer but knew that Mama wanted to rock it just a bit longer as Fall looms it's lower temperature our way.

Insert blazer and ankle boots.

I added this blush pink tailored blazer which not only provided warmth but gave this breezy dress some structure. The lower profile black ankle boots added a bit of edge to an otherwise sweet dress and made it Fall friendly. If the temperature was colder I would have worn black matted tights underneath. You guys know that I do not like to be cold :)

pardon me while I drool over the embroidery details on this dress :)

Transition those Summer silk tops or sleeveless tees under a cozy cardigan or under an oversized sweater. I love to layer so this is a great way to still incorporate those Summer loves. Textured tights are a great way to wear that flowy skirt a bit longer into October paired with a light sweater. Your closet is working now! What's your favorite Summer wear that you rock into Fall? Share below and click the adorable heart if you're loving on this look. See you next week my peeps!

3 Tips To Finding Your Style

Some uber fun with the talented Harley Goul

Style! What does it mean and how can we all capture it? I see style as a creative expression of who I am that can be translated in what I wear. I love fashion and the process of putting things together in ways most people might not. That's a big part of why I'm a personal stylist. I work to help my clients navigate what THEIR style is and of course, the process has to be FUN!! We have this moment that is happening right now where we get to determine what we wear, how we look and feel about our bodies without prescribing to anyone else's agenda. Can I get an amen for that please :) Here's a few of my "go to" tips to finding your style.

jacket: adidas   tank top: JCrew   Jeans: Frame ( Fancy Pants)   Shoes: Zara

Listen to what speaks to you

No voodoo or magical chanting here. Just a real look at what styles you find yourself feeling great in. Your t-shirts and comfy pants don't count because come on, those are a given. Wearing comfy pants as I type :) It's that blouse, dress or jeans you wear all the time that makes you feel confident and looks great on you. Get more of that! It could be the blouse is a classic style, start venturing more into finding styles that speak that same thread of classic.

Save what inspires you

Yep, that Pinterest board is a great idea. I love when my clients show me their style board. It allows me to see their wishes, loves and style thread. If you see an outfit you love, take a picture of it, remove it from the magazine and pin it on a style board. This allows you to see the styles that you find yourself gravitating towards and have a great reference to use for "what to wear".

Experiment and kick fear to the curb

What's fun about fashion is the ability to change our minds on what we want to wear and look at a moments notice. It doesn't have to be this serious, I'm going to marry you commitment. There's a lot of stores that offer similar styles that are budget friendly. If there's a style you want to try, just do it.  I've got your back. Trying on, can be a pain at times but the reward is seeing what works for you. The big win here is you're taking a little "love on you" time for yourself and could potentially find your new favorite outfit simply by trying.

This can be done with a pencil skirt, midi length skirt or a dressy trousers. You can wear your dressy styles with your casual comfy styles. Preaching! Don't fight those little moments.
